Protection of Students
The Child, Family and Community Service Act is the legislative authority for
child welfare in British Columbia. Its' fundamental guiding principle is that
the safety and well-being of children are the paramount considerations.

The BC Handbook for Action on Child Abuse and Neglect for Service Providers
This Handbook is designed to support an integrated, collaborative response to child abuse and neglect by:
  • providing information about identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and neglect
  • providing an overview of relevant law and government policies
  • clarifying the roles and shared responsibilities of service providers, including their accountability for responding to suspected child abuse and neglect, and
  • ensuring that responses to suspected child abuse and neglect in British Columbia are effective, consistent and sensitive to the needs of children.

Responding to Child Welfare Concerns – Your Role in Knowing When and What to Report
As a service provider, all independent (CTABC teachers) schools have a key role to play in helping to keep children safe. A companion guide entitled Responding to Child Welfare Concerns: Your Role in Knowing When and What to Report is available for the general public, to help ensure that all British Columbians are able to recognize and take action on suspected child abuse and neglect.
Both publications are available online at
